Nora Charlton hates London during the social season. The year is 1851, and she and her two sisters must attend parties every other night for the purpose of finding husbands. But Nora dreams of being a writer, instead.

 

Like everyone else, Nora has secrets. She's been in love with her next-door neighbor for ten years, though he hardly seems to notice her. And she's still haunted by the death of her mother to cholera 11 years ago, as well as the death of her brother, who fell mysteriously down a flight of stairs three years ago.

 

When the famous Great Exhibition comes to town, it brings new suitors into the Charlton sisters' lives. Nora's imagination begins to run wild, and she finds herself suspecting everyone around her in the possible murder of her brother.

 

Nora knows it's fallen upon her to save her sisters from their new suitors, whom she suspects more than any other. But shadows have begun to follow her everywhere, trying to prevent her from learning the truth…
