(Human) Characters from the Hairy Jack Trilogy
Accompanying each character description is a picture of the lovable pet upon which the human character is based. Anyone who has pets must agree they all have their own individual, unique personalities. Having unhealthy attachments to my own pets, I therefore came up with the idea of having them star in one of my novels as humans, keeping their own individual personalities and their names. Let me introduce you to the main characters of the Hairy Jack Trilogy:
Wyatt Mortimer
Wyatt is a family-oriented and loyal kind of guy, though he's not what one would call a people person. For a 27-year-old, he's a little prickly and stand-offish, but it seems only to hide a sweet and gooey center. A boy of the outdoors, he rather enjoys digging up bones with his uncle, the Archaeologist, though he has a hard time leaving his home to do so. He and Ivy are friends since childhood, but having rather a more humble and poor upbringing than she, he doesn't quite feel her equal. With coal black hair, full and serious brows, and deep mahogany eyes, he sometimes attracts the looks of a lady or two, though he knows his pocketbook will never satisfy them.
Ivy McGivney
A wild and goofy tomboy of 24, Ivy has an easy time being one of the boys and a hard time being serious. Stubbornly independent, she is never to be told what to do and is frequently getting into trouble. Born into privelege though she is, she and her sister, Maggie, want nothing more than to be independent, working women, proving all men wrong about them. With long features, cheeks splattered with dozens of brown freckles, and bobbed auburn hair that is unstyled and untamed, she knows that her sister is the pretty one. Though she prefers it this way, she sometimes fears she will forever be the friend and nothing more.
Maggie McGivney
Although she is rather prissy, sensitive, and scared of virtually everything, Maggie, nonetheless, has a stubborn, independent quality of her own. Very rarely the prim darling is roused into anger, but in the few times it comes out she becomes frightening even to her sister, Ivy. Frequently nervous with her Ivy's schemes, she never gets into trouble when Ivy isn't around, though she follows her easily enough. With dainty and feminine features, doe-like and innocent eyes, and bobbed auburn hair that is styled in refined finger waves, she is known to others as the pretty, well-behaved younger sister.
Roxy Raymond
A 16-year-old orphan living on the streets, Roxy one day claims to be a relation of the McGivney family. Ivy and Maggie's parents immediately take her in, though everyone in town, including the sisters, is suspicious of her troubled and shady past on the streets. Shortly after her arrival, the threats begin. Despite all this, she seems to be nothing but loving and gentle, is extremely obedient, and suffers from an unfortunate dose of separation anxiety. Clinging close to her new family, she tends to their every need with nothing but gratitude and love, always fearing they will ultimately turn her away.
Dr. Saul "Spooky" Griffin
Essentially a nomad, "Spooky" frequently travels the world giving lectures, teaching classes, and conducting field excavations in far-off countries. He was appointed the nickname “Spooky,” as his favorite topic of conversation is of people who have been dead for several years. With a wild shock of white hair and a curmudgeonly expression that is often hard to read, he intimidates everyone except Wyatt. And then one day he reveals to Wyatt the secret of his career: that he has spent his life searching and finding mythical and magical artifacts.
Mayor Scotty Lemere
The mayor of the city of Natchez often visits the McGivney home as a particularly loyal friend of the family. He often grows frustrated with the quickly changing world of the 1920s, but in an effort to impress Ivy, he tries rather hard to adapt and modernize his views. The graying black, handlebar moustache which sits thickly above his upper lip, and the muff of frazzled graying black hair atop his head makes him closely resemble a Scottish Terrier.
Lewis "Donk" Hart
An Australian man of about 30, “Donk” is the epitome of tall, dark and handsome. Dashing and slightly roguish, his hair and eyes are an alluring shade of dark chocolate, his skin is tanned, and his jaw and cheeks are often shaded with a heavy five o’clock shadow. He was nicknamed after the Australian slang for his reputation of being a charming renegade, as the subtle edge of danger in his eye suggests, though he has a soft spot for Maggie. An intelligent linguist and interpreter, he knows many languages, and has connections with Spooky and his deceased colleague.
Brewster Darling
The young, 21-year-old cousin of Mayor Scotty, Brewster is undeniably pleasant on the eyes with curly, sandy hair, twinkling blue eyes, and pale freckles on very pale cheeks. But more than this, he is modest, shy, and unassuming, and does not seem to know he’s good-looking. Immediately he displays an affinity for Maggie, and his gentleness and modesty suits Maggie well. Though he is a friend of Donk, a competition brews between them over none other than the girl.
